Topic: Genetically Modified Animals (GMA): Beneficial/threatening?
The general assembly,
Stressing the fact that the recent genetic modification of animals (1974) results in a lack of information and knowledge of the matter and therefore of a significant ignorance regarding its effect on the consumer and the environment in the long term,
Acknowledging the fact that the short term benefits genetically modified animals provide render the matter attractive despite all potential dangers concealed by time,
Concerned by the risks of disturbance in the food chain due to the eventual access to nature for these animals,
Taking into account the value of genetically modified animals such as the Sudden Death Mosquito which reduces the population of disease-carrying mosquitoes by 80% in 3 months,
Emphasizing the importance of media and information distribution regarding genetically modified animals and the facilitated manipulation of the public,
1) Further invites the government and its branches to multiply the number of investigations and sanctions regulating the unauthorised practice of genetic engineering;
2) Calls upon the further inclusion of the matter in educational programs in order to raise awareness;
3) Requires the sterilisation of genetically modified animals when deemed necessary by the United Nations;
4) Encourages governments to pursue and develop research in the field;
5) Invites the press to deliver objective media coverage on the subject.
